Observation Narrative
This plot is in a frontal-dune grassland within a 14 acre patch that is part of a large larger 50 acre example that occurs discontinuously along 11 km of shoreline on the bay side of the Eastern Shore. Vegetation is a well-developed grassland with exposed white sand. There is die-back on the grasses from the recent storm surge and Cakile has senesced for the season. Much of the stand is dominated by Ammophila breviligulata and Panicum amarum ssp. amarum, but scattered patches of Uniola paniculata (here nearing its northern range limits) are present. Drier grassland behind the frontal dune are dominated by Schizachyrium littorale.
